Here’s Your Problem: You’re Skipping the Fundamentals

A Series on the Most Common Issues Facing Busy Adults

If you’re a busy adult trying to stay active, there’s a good chance you’ve run into this before.

In this series, we break down the most common issues we see—and more importantly, what’s actually causing them and how to fix them.

Why Your Workouts Aren’t Working the Way They Should

A lot of people feel like they’re doing the right things.

They’re trying to stay active. Maybe getting a couple workouts in each week. Mixing in some strength training, maybe some cardio.

On paper, it looks solid.

But the results don’t quite match the effort.

They’re not getting stronger the way they expected. Movements don’t feel smooth. Sometimes things feel tight, awkward, or even a little painful.

So the natural question becomes:

“Why isn’t this working?

It’s Usually Not About Effort

Most people don’t have an effort problem.

They’re willing to show up. They’re willing to work.

What’s missing is structure.

They’re doing exercises, but there’s no real system behind it. No clear progression. No understanding of what their body actually needs.

So instead of building a foundation, they’re just stacking workouts on top of whatever limitations are already there.

And eventually, that catches up.

What Most People Never Learn

Before you worry about how hard you’re training, there’s a more important question:

Can your body move the way it’s supposed to?

At a basic level, your body relies on a few key movement patterns every single day:

  • Sitting down and standing up
  • Bending and picking things up
  • Pushing and pulling
  • Stabilizing your body while you move

These aren’t just “gym exercises.” They’re the foundation of how you move through life.

The problem is, most people haven’t maintained these patterns very well over time.

How This Starts to Show Up

When those fundamentals start to break down, it doesn’t always show up in a dramatic way.

It’s subtle at first.

A squat feels more like pressure in your knees than your hips.
Reaching overhead feels restricted or uncomfortable.
Your lower back starts doing more work than it should.

Nothing feels completely broken—but nothing feels quite right either.

And when you add more intensity on top of that, it doesn’t fix the issue.

It exposes it.

Why Doing More Isn’t the Answer

When progress stalls, most people try to solve it by doing more.

More workouts. More intensity. More effort.

But if the foundation isn’t there, doing more just reinforces the same problems.

It’s like building on top of something unstable. You might get away with it for a while, but eventually it starts to show.

What Actually Moves the Needle

Progress usually starts when you take a step back.

Not to do less—but to clean things up.

That means focusing on how you move before worrying about how hard you’re pushing.

It means building control, improving positioning, and developing strength in a way that actually supports your body.

Once that foundation is in place, everything else starts to feel different.

Movements get smoother. Strength comes more naturally. And the little aches and pains don’t seem to hang around the same way.

Where Most People Get Stuck

The challenge is that most people don’t know what to look for.

They’re not sure:

  • Which patterns need work
  • What good movement should feel like
  • How to progress without overdoing it

So they default to what they know—just keep going and hope it improves.

Sometimes it does.

But a lot of times, it doesn’t.

A Better Way to Approach It

At SUMMIT, we don’t start with random workouts.

We start with the fundamentals.

How you squat.
How you hinge.
How you push and pull.
How you control your body through movement.

From there, we build everything on top of that.

So instead of working around limitations, you’re actually improving them.

Final Thought

If you’ve been putting in the effort but not seeing the results—or things just don’t feel the way they should—it might not be about doing more.

It might be about doing things in the right order.

Fix the foundation, and everything built on top of it gets better.
